Dr. Sumita Bhatia joined Vantage Oncology and Valley Radiotherapy Associates (VRA) as the first female radiation oncologist to treat patients in the West Hills and Woodland Hills area.
Prior to her arrival, Dr. Bhatia attended a six-year Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City: School of Medicine, where she earned these degrees. She taught Medical Physiology and Biochemistry as a student instructor. Dr. Bhatia continued her academic pursuits as a clinical researcher of gastrointestinal malignancies in the Department of Radiation Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX and completed an internship at UCLA Harbor County Hospital in Torrance, CA.
After receiving her medical degree, she completed a residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where she served as a chief resident.
Dr. Bhatia has received many honors and awards including three Honors in Radiation Oncology. In addition to graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from medical school, the University of Missouri—School of Medicine also awarded her with Academic Distinction two consecutive years. Throughout her radiation oncology training, she published numerous articles on various disease sites, including gastrointestinal malignancies. She has also co-written two book chapters on esophageal cancer and anal cancer.
Dr. Bhatia is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology with special training in High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, 3-D treatment planning, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT). Dr. Bhatia is bilingual in English and Hindi.
